Brief Summary and Description
By:
Since 2004 Cardinal Ritter high school has been avidly involved in recycling projects. We began recycling paper, but now as a community we recycle paper, plastics, cardboard, and glass. We have recycled a total of 55.45 tons of paper since 2007. This school year we purchased new recycling bins for use in our cafeteria. We recycle paper the last class of each week. We go around to each classroom in the school collecting paper. At the end of the second semester each year, all of the students clean out their lockers, recycling paper products and placing binders that can be reused in a box. This has been very useful recycling a huge amount of paper that would otherwise just have been put in the trash. On January 18, 2012, our ecology class had a day to recycle electronics. This was a community service because in Indiana it is illegal to throw away electronics. We offered this service to our school neighbors, our high school, parents, and our feeder schools. Also, a few years ago, teachers had a day where they were not allowed to use paper products in their lessons. We plan on having this again sometime within the next year. Students have also asked to buy reusable water bottles instead of plastic. We plan to incorporate this into our lunch program. Our ecology class also plans on learning more about the process of recycling electronics study and field trips.
