Organic Veggies!

This project has gone quite well, because it has been student-run from start to finish (though it really will never be FINISHED!). The Nordhoff Earth Allies shared their first harvest with other students at a lunch-time salad bar tasting event which was very well received. The garden is labor-intensive, due to its being 100% organic. The challenge now is that the driving force behind the creation and maintenance of the garden is a senior, so we will need to develop a leadership team for the coming year!
The students took over an abandoned garden space, in which 6 pixie tangerine trees had been planted, and which was overrun with nut grass. They double-dug and screened the soil to remove (most of) the nut grass, and worked organic compost that the students had been developing into the top several inches of the soil prior to planting. Weeding close to the plants is by hand, and space between vegetable patches has been sheet-mulched with cardboard covered with mulch.
