Riparian Habitat Exploration
By:
Two teachers took students from four Intro Biology students to a segment of the Ventura River that flows year-round. We were led by a naturalist from the Ventura Hillsides conservency group. The conservancy paid for transportation for the trip, which made this trip possible even in tight budget times. Many of our students had never walked in a stream or river, and going into water up to their middles was very exiting, and ellicited many squeals and shrieks! The trip would have been worth it just for that, but our guide also demonstrated water quality testing, discussed human activities that influence water quality, and taught students about our local riparian habitat. It was a FABULOUS experience, and I would do it again in a heartbeat! I have found that local organizations are often willing to help, and have expertise and suggestions for activities that can really bring the curriculum to life.
