March Madness at Terence C. Reilly

The Physical Education Team at Terence C. Reilly promoted a series of Health and Fitness activities involving students, and staff but most importantly parents. It was a month full of fun activities that involved lots of learning to become a more active and healthy school family. As a result the goal was successfully accomplished. As of now the school has the Silver Healthy Alliance Award, and now thriving for the Golden Healthy Alliance Award.
Staff Nutritional Luncheon- Friday, March 2nd
In order to kick off nutrition Month a healthy luncheon was organized for the staff. This included garden salad, fruit salad, and a variety of healthy wraps.
The objective of this activity was to promote and inform the staff on the importance of having a nutritional balanced diet.
March Madness Day- Friday, March 9th
In recognition of the annual March Madness NCAA Basketball Tournament, Terence C. Reilly held its own March Madness Middle School Tournament. Physical Education teachers had to set up their Phys Ed classes in brackets, which played each other in their Phys Ed classes until the Final Four teams were decided. The winner of the final four played the teachers, in a students verse teachers basketball game. On that same day of the basketball tournament, the school held a fundraiser in which the students had to pay $1.00 to wear their Phys Ed uniform the entire school day and the teachers had to pay $2.00 for “Dress like a Phys Ed teacher day”.
Family Fit Night- Friday, March 16th
Students and their families were invited to participate in a family fit night. This was comprised of a combination of cardio kickboxing, dance fitness, and martial arts.
The objective of this activity was to be able to incorporate fun ways to stay fit and work out as a family.
Top Chef Competition- Thursday, March 22nd
Parents and students were invited to attend a cooking presentation from Mr. Paul Conte from Edison Technical Academy. He demonstrated how to transform a typical ethnic dish into a healthy meal. Meanwhile, while this is happening the three winners of the Reilly’s Pride healthy family recipe contest was asked to compete in a top chef cook off. Each winner was paired with their parent and one of Mr. Conte’s Culinary Arts students. At the end of Mr. Conte’s presentation parents and students in attendance were able to try Mr. Conte’s healthy ethnic dish in a buffet style. After everyone had tried the food, a panel of judges decided the winner of the top chef cook off.
The objective of this activity was to have parent and student involvement when preparing healthy food choices as a family at home.
