Garden Compost Program

By:

Billy Mitchell gardeners are very proud of their compost effort. They have learned how to mix nitrogen rich garden and cafeteria waste; fruit and vegetables, with carbon ingredients such as dried leaves, branches, straw, and shredded newspaper. Each week the students add new ingredients, mix it up and add water, much like a cake! After about 6 months of diligent and consistant attendance, we are ready to sift our finished compost. Nutrient rich soil, teaming with macro and micro decomposers. It never ceases to amaze us how this recent garbage, turns into beautiful soil. Sifting the finished compost is always a highlight. The students often see many of the larger decomposers up close.[image] sifting compost
