Doss Elementary Celebrates Earth Week 2012 - Lorax Style!
It’s that time of year again…Earth Day 2012 is Sunday, April 22nd. The Doss Green Team is excited to announce our Earth Week celebration for April 16 – 20, 2012. This year, our theme will center around The Lorax, by Dr. Suess. Using Dr. Suess’s beautiful story our Doss community will focus on learning the importance of environmental stewardship and the impact one person can make in our neighborhood, and our world.
Homemade chocolate mustaches made by students. One given to each teacher and raffled to students throughout the week used to tie in to our Lorax theme.
Truffula trees (The Lorax) decorated the hallways and cafeteria. We used old swimming pool noodles donated by Doss students.
Schedule of Schoolwide Events:
*Black –Out Monday, Wear Black! Our focus will be on conserving energy, reducing our use of non-renewable resources such as electricity.
*Trash – Free Tuesday. Pack a lunch that has minimal impact on our landfill. We will focus on our cafeteria’s recycling and composting program, and single-stream recycling in the classroom. Our Pictures:
One student found this special message in his lunch box.
5th Graders packed trash-free lunches!
4th graders with THE CLEANEST, trash-free table!!
*Walk or Bike Wednesday. (Special awards/recognition for participation)
120 bike riders, and an estimated 100 students by foot arrived at school Wednesday morning in groups and with parents. Students noted a significant decrease in morning traffic, and neighborhood mobile commuters were astounded by students parading spontaneously to school!
*Book Swap for 3rd – 5th grades, Thursday and Friday. Students will bring in gently used chapter books to swap with one another picking up new books to read for the summer while understanding the importance reusing our treasures. Some of the books for Book Swap came from our Austin City Library's Recycled Reads store. Books were selected from the Recycled Reads book shelves by a small group of students.
