Students earn money from recycling!
By:
Students at Summit School have learned the importance of recycling. The number of trash bins in the lunch area have been reducing in an effort to encourage more going into the recycling bins. Students get excited when they see empty or almost-empty trash cans. Then they can see that their efforts are making a difference. Most students who bring lunches use reusable containers so there is little or no waste. Students have also learned about the importance of conserving materials and reusing to reduce waste. The 6th graders have been selling recyclables to pay for their field trip to Catalina Island where they study marine science. This has been a very positive activity because they understand how to convert recyclables into value. The entire school community has a rethink, reuse, recycle, and compost mentality. Creating an awareness about reducing consumption has created a community of students who are very aware of how what they do directly affects the environment.
