Composted Pumpkins from Halloween

By:

From November 1-4, 2011, Bryker Woods Elementary PTA organized the 3rd annual Pumpkin Composting Drive. By encouraging families to bring their pumpkins to our school's composting dumpster in the post-Halloween days, we diverted hundreds of pounds of compostable waste from the landfill. One student, pictured here, cleverly combined the collection drive with our Trick-or-Treat for Unicef campaign. She sent an email to her neighborhood listserve offering to collect pumpkins for composting in exchange for a suggested $1 donation to Unicef. She collected 30 pumpkins and $60 for Unicef!
