WOW- Walk or Wheel to School
By:
WOW (Walk or Wheels*) Program is a PTA-sponsored program stresses pedestrian and bicycle safety, promotes physical activity, and encourages environmental awareness.
Students earn points and purchase prizes at the WOW store several times during the year.
- Students who walk or ride wheels* to school will keep track of their points on the WOW Log Sheet. The first one is attached. Each way to and from school is worth one point. Log sheets will be turned in three times during the year. Students can spend their points, or save them for the next prize period.
- Students who cannot walk or wheel to school can participate in WOW through Coach Hugo’s walking club. Each day walked for Coach Hugo, earns one WOW point.
- The WOW Program will sponsor a “walking school bus” twice during the year. The walking school bus will travel safely to and from school with the help of parent volunteers and crossing guards. Participants receive 5 extra WOW points each way!
- You may drive your child, and park at a distance you feel is appropriate for the child to walk or wheel to school. Part of our objective is to ease traffic in and out of the school and immediate areas.
Safety is a top priority for students walking/wheeling to school. Pedestrian and bicycle safety tips are available on the PTA website at www.parkglenpta.org. If you have any questions regarding WOW or would like to form a walk/wheel pool, please contact WOW chairperson, Shannon Falkenrath, at wow@parkglenpta.org.
*Wheels include bicycles and non-motorized scooters, and can be locked at the bike racks. Fort Worth has a law that requires all children under the age of 18 to wear a protective helmet when riding their bikes on public streets or park property.
On October 3, 2012, we kicked off our WOW program. Students who walked or wheeled to school were greeted with a hand stamp and a healthy snack.
On October 31, 2012 and April 17, 2013, we will have our Walking School Bus. Students and parents will meet at a central location and walk to school.
