Greenprint Challenge for St. Helen Catholic School

Eco-Campus---- Recycle/Waste   

On Wednesdays students in the 5th grade collect paper recycling bins from the assigned classrooms and office locations.  They are supervised as they carry the bins over to the Abitibi bins outside in the parking lot.  It takes team work to empty the bins and close the tops of the Abitibi bins!  Our nice blue Rubbermaid recycling bins were purchased with funds earned from recycling old printer toner cartridges, cell phones, and laptops.

Recycling Paper & Plastic for the School

 What is the goal/purpose of the project?

1. Teach the importance of recycling to all students  

2. Work as a team to remove paper and plastic to be recycled

 Who will be involved in the project?

5th grade students & their teacher + recycling reps in classrooms

 How will you record the project (video, photos, PowerPoint, etc.)?

 Do you have a budget for your project? How will you attain those finances? 

 

No, we do not need a budget for this activity.  In the summer of 2010, our school used fundsfromrecyclingink cartridges and purchased 20 Rubbermaid recycling bins (41-quart size) at thecostof $8.70 each plusshipping.)  These bins are very durable and are marked with the roomnumberon the bottom.

Nature Adventure---- Outdoor Skills

          The 5th graders attend environmental education camp at Camp Kappe.  The students stay in cabins from Tuesday until Friday.  They explore the outdoors, canoe, fish, garden, do archery, use compasses, learn about energy sources and water conservation, and engage in team-building activities.  Students help to care for the farm animals.  The night hike on Tuesday is a great way to star-gaze and listen to frog calls.

5th Graders go to Environmental Education Camp

 1. Learn outdoor skills

                         2. Participate in team-building activities

                          3. Learn the importance of environmental stewardship

5th grade students, parents chaperones & their teacher

The cost for each student is $105.  The class had bake sales to raise money for the bus ($870) and to reduce the cost for families.  Families will pay the difference.

Health & Fitness----Fitness & Education

All of the students K-8 will participate in Field Day in April.

Students will be on teams for tug-of-war, relay races, basketball toss, dribbling relay, scooter board races, and crab-walk.  The whole school participates in dances under the pavilion.  At the end of the day, students usually cool off with a water hose.

1. Enjoy physical exercise

All students, teachers, and some parents

No additional money is needed for field day because the school already has the supplies through the PEbudget.  Students do not receive ribbons for places.  The emphasis is on team-building and good sportsman ship.

April 1, 2013 to April 30, 2013

 

Natural Classrooms---- Field Investigations   

Second-grade teachers set up three bird feeders in the school yard.  Not only did the birds get to eat, but students used this opportunity to observe the birds!

Feed the Birds!

       2. What is the goal/purpose of the project?

 To conduct field investigations of bird behavior  

        3. Who will be involved in the project?

2nd grade students & their teacher

  4. How will you record the project (video, photos, PowerPoint, etc.)?

         5. Do you have a budget for your project? How will you attain those finances? 

Yes, the bird feeders and bird seed cost $30.  The budget for teacher supplies covered the expenses.
