America Recycles Day Activities
By:
In celebration of America Recycles Day 2012, the PTA Environmental Committee at Carpenter Hill Elementary held Waste-Free Lunch Talks during lunch periods. Four of the Committee members talked to all 634 students informing and providing examples of what qualifies as a waste-free lunch. Members also asked the students to hold up examples of waste-free lunch items from their own lunch bags. Students were proud to know that even their small changes could make a big difference when it comes to school waste. According to our cafeteria administrator, about 300 of our 634 students bring their own lunch regularly. Since this is nearly half of our student population, it is important for Carpenter Hill families to be informed on how to pack a waste-free lunch that consists of fresh and healthy food options in earth-friendly reusable containers.
- In an effort to connect school to home:
- ~Information regarding waste-free lunches was emailed to all Carpenter Hill parents via our Home Room Parents.
- ~Informative bookmarks were sent home with all Carpenter Hill students in their Friday Folders.
-
- ~A waste-free lunch kit was awarded to one student by one name being drawn from a compilation of all 634 student names.

- Plastic Bag Recycling
- The PTA Environmental Committee also collected plastic bags to be recycled in celebration of America Recycles Day. Committee members were positioned at both entrances to the school during morning drop-off and in 20 minutes gathered 220 gallons of plastic shopping bags. These bags were dropped off at our local HEB PLUS for recycling.

- Library Book Donation
America Recycles Day was also about environmental awareness. The PTA Environmental Committee chose to donate books to the library that had environmental-related themes.

- To remind teachers of our America Recycles Day Activities, we repurposed a can and filled it with America Recycles Day Pencils. We also created a label that highlighted our activities for the day.
- America Recycles Day 2012 was a huge success. The best part was talking to the students one-on-one and feeling their excitement about being green. Little hands make a big difference at Carpenter Hill Elementary.
