Recycling 2012-2013
By:
Last year was our first year to implement our recycling program and a Green Team. The team was made up of 4th and 5th graders that would help collect recycling from all of the classrooms and work areas throughout the school every Wednesday.
This year we have continued the program with all 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students forming the team. Different class sections help on an alternating basis so that everyone has a chance to experience the collection process and the importance of putting only recyclables in the containers. They have to check each container to make sure that we are collecting items that can be recycled. This helps students become more aware of what they and their classmates are putting in the containers. Progress has been made because we are finding less nonrecyclables in the containers. We use to find a lot of dirty kleenexes, food wrappers and food in the recycling bins.
Our team also helps with other projects throughout the year. Whenever we have supplies come in, our team is called upon to help with recycling the boxes, paper, plastics or styrofoam. We are working with a middle school art teacher in another school district to save any styrofoam we come across throughout the year. She will use the styrofoam in art projects with her students. We would certainly rather see styrofoam used for art than to have it fill our landfills for years.
We received new textbooks and were left with boxes galore. After checking with teachers to see if they could use any boxes, we tackled the task of breaking down the boxes and taking them to the recycling bin for pick up.
Great job GREEN TEAM!
