Beautify the Courtyard
By:
As part of Earth Week activities at Carpenter Hill Elementary, the PTA Envrionmental Committee held "Make Your Mark" Monday to help beautify the concrete courtyard behind the school. We have been trying to think of a low cost idea to make this area a place to enjoy and this ended up being a complete success for Earth Week.
The committee asked all students K-5, which is nearly 650 students, to bring sidewalk chalk to recess and create pictures and messages pertaining to saving the Earth, the environment and celebrating nature. Some chalk was provided in case some students forgot to bring their own, but most of the students came ready to get creative with their own chalk and enjoyed their outdoor recess time displaying their talents. Recess lasts for 20 minutes and we found that the students that participated used that entire time to create their artwork. Many were so proud of their work that they signed their names. There was also a lot of teamwork involved in many of the creations.
The students enjoyed this activity so much that we encouraged them to create pictures and messages the entire week during recess. We hope to create more outdoor creative spaces on our campus. The artwork made our concrete courtyard much more inviting.
