Butterfly Garden 2013

We decided that not only did our sign need updating and a makeover, but our butterfly garden also needed sprucing up and new perennials. We also wanted to enlarge our butterfly garden. So on Saturday, April 6th, parents, students and volunteers helped to extend our butterfly garden. The land was cleared and cannas were dug up and placed along the backside of the portable.

Larkspur seeds provide us with color in early spring. The lollipop verbena has an iridescent purple flower that is beautiful in the sunlight. It is almost blinding when you look at the flower closely. The lantana and milkweek plants are barely little mounds here, but they will grow to be rather large plants that will attract bees and butterflies. We are looking forward to August when we will be able to conduct our insect/butterfly survey. The fourth picture shows these 2 plants last August.

These plants were planted last year and have flourished,

New perennials were added to the new extension and the cannas are flourishing. We can't wait until they spread and fill in more.

We have also created another area for perennials that will attract bees and butterflies. This area was also cleared on April 6th. We can't wait for all these plants to grow, grow, grow!
