Summer Water Safety
By:
With summer coming and students spending time at area pools or lakes, we invited instructors from the American Red Cross to remind our students about the importance of being safe in and around water.
According to the American Red Cross, A recent survey shows that almost half the adults surveyed on water safety say they have had an experience where they nearly drowned, and one in four know someone who has drowned. While over 90% of families with young children will be in the water at some point this summer, almost half (48%) plan to swim in a place with no lifeguard.
We want to equip our students with knowledge on water safety, so on Thursday, April 11th our students received their water safety lessons from Red Cross instructors.
Students were reminded of safety rules around the pool and lakes.
1. Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards.
2. Always swim with a buddy. Do not allow anyone to swim alone.
3. Never leave a young child unattended near water.
4. Do not trust a child's life to another child.
5. Ask permission to go near or in the water.
6. No running, pushing or risky playing near the water.
7. Young children or inexperienced swimmers should wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved life
jacket in or near the water.
Students were taught how to select a life jacket that is just the right fit for them.
.
Students also learned different ways to help a swimmer in need without risking their lives.
Students have promised to remember water safety rules and be safe swimmers this summer.
