GREENPRINT PROPOSAL 2013-2014

Greenprint for Natural Classrooms – Certified Monarch Waystation

  • Schuylerville School District will certify the existing Butterfly Garden as a waystation for monarch butterflies using
guidelines provided by Monarch Watch. http://monarchwatch.org/waystations/

  • In the spring of 2012, GRS created a butterfly garden on the edge of the vegetation to attract butterflies and to
provide them with nourishment and a place to rest. The purpose of the Butterfly Garden was to enhance the learning environment, supplement existing curriculum and allow the students to partake in hands-on learning of monarch butterflies. By formally creating and maintaining a monarch waystation GRS will continue to contribute to monarch conservation and efforts that will help assure the preservation of the species and the continuation of the spectacular monarch migration
    phenomenon.

  • With the guidance of the GRS committee, a local Girl Scout troop will make any changes to the existing garden and apply
for the certification of the monarch waystation.

  • The butterfly garden will be recorded through photographs, student observations and then registered online at http://monarchwatch.org/waystations/registry/.  (Please note: all of GRS activities are also posted on the Schuylerville Green Ribbon School Project Facebook Page.)

  • The budget for this activity is projected at $250 additional plants and compost for the garden.

  • The butterfly garden will be registered in the summer of 2014.
