Native Texas Habitat
By:
In partnership with the National Wildlife Federation, O. Henry M.S. has establish the basis of an outdoor classroom on campus. The outdoor classroom will function as a native Texas habitat as well as an enrichment resource for all teachers and students. The grounds at O. Henry include two enclosed courtyards; one has been transformed into our outdoor classroom. Students from the Environmental Club as well as Mr. Martell's 7th grade classes create plans for the outdoor classroom. Then students, teachers, parents, and the community installed the garden during two workdays and throughout the school year in Mr. Martell's class and the Environmental club.
Students, Faculty and Parents help install the garden.

Although the habitat is not yet finished, amazing results have already emerged! Butterflies and native birds have been spotted in the bird bath and local flowers. Also, classes including science and english classes have started using the space for learning and reflection. In the upcoming months, we hope to better establish a humming bird and butterfly garden as well as additional habitat for native birds and small lizards. We also plan to redesign the pathways and provide outdoor collaborative space for our students. Thus far, over 100 volunteers have offered their assistance!
