Promoting an Active Lifestyle in Preschool
By:
At Temple Emanuel in Dallas, TX living a healthy lifestyle is an important component of our curriculum. The 2-year-old Giving Tree class promotes healthy living each day through active play, PE and yoga classes, and healthy snacks.
Every other Monday, the Giving Tree Class goes to PE with Coach Walker. In PE, we start each week with warm up exercises. Once warmed up, the children learn necessary skills for different sports such as volleyball, football, tennis and lacrosse.
On the weeks we don't attend PE, we go to Yoga class with Taylor. Taylor walks the children through a warm up routine, which consists of different yoga poses such as: cat, turtle, table, down dog and butterfly. Once the warm up is complete she reads a story, after each page she incorporates a specific pose or movement. At the end of each class, the children lay on their backs for Savasana, where Taylor counts to ten while the children lay still.
Each day, children enjoy a minimum of 30 minutes of outdoor playtime. Temple Emanuel is fortunate to have a natural playscape with wondrous areas for the children to actively explore. The children love riding bikes and scooters, building in the sand pit, climbing the berm, going down the slide and swinging! When the weather is warm the children love climbing through our waterfall.
In addition to promoting an active lifestyle, healthy eating is also encouraged. Each month, The Giving Tree Class goes to Culinary Arts class with Cheryl. While there, children are exposed to fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as a variety of herbs and spices. Additionally, every snack served has healthy ingredients and no sugar.
