Outdoor Physical Education
By: RMCA
Rainbow Community School has made a committment to hold phsyical education classes outdoors - except in the most extreme weather conditions.
We have outdoor classroom space where students can play games, enjoy the outdoors, and get physical exercise.
This is a recent image from our Field Day. Classes met at our Outdoor stage to then head to our newly acquired field. The participated in various physical-movement-style stations. They also had discussions on sportsmanship, safety and rules of conduct.
The school has acquired the new property adjacent to the campus. As part of the school's master plan, the board (with parent, faculty and staff representatives) all have elected to not design an indoor gymnasium. Instead, students will continue to have outdoor physical education classes on campus.
However, this is really almost like just any other day: our fabulous P.E. teacher always has class outdoors and sets up games that demand teamwork, physical movement and cooperation with nature in order to fulfill the requirements of the lesson.
In addition, our P.E. teacher collaborates with classroom teachers to create events for the school that promote health, such as Screen Free Week (that encourages students to not only stay away from screens, but also to get outside) and Walk or Bike to School Week (which promotes walking and biking to school whenever possible, not just during this week).
