Garbage Pizza

By:

Fifth graders learned that a lot of what we throw into the trash can be recycled!

First, students were asked to list materials that go into the trash.  They discussed which materials could be recycled.  Each student drew a circle and estimated the portion of the whole for categories of municipal waste.  Then the students compared their estimates with percentages provided by "Waste in Place" curriculum.

The fun part was making the Garbage Pizza!  We used glass pellets, plastic, foil for metal, yard waste, fabric, wood craft sticks, paper scraps, and even tiny rubber bands for braces.

Be sure to see the "Waste in Place" Curriculum sponsored by Keep America Beautiful.
