Aluminum Can Drive & 115-Can Challenge
By:
Fifth graders were challenged to bring 115 aluminum cans to school on Visiting Day (just before school started) or the first day of school. Students could either crust all the cans OR leave them uncrushed. The cans were used for Science Lab Investigation and then then taken to the local metal recycling center.
The school-wide aluminum can drives were scheduled for Wednesday, October 2 and Monday, November 18. Families were able to drop off their aluminum cans during morning drop-off. Parent volunteers loaded the bags of cans to their vehicles for the trip to the local metal recycling center.
Results:
249 pounds of aluminum cans recycled!
$124.75 collected for the 5th Grade trip to Camp Kappe School of Environmental Education.
Students became aware of the importance of recycling nonrewable resources (aluminum).
Aluminum cans were used for Science Lab Investigation. Students used the lab sheet, balances for determining mass, a fish scale for bags of cans, and calculators.
