Recess Gardeners
By:
Carpenter Hill Elementary school has a group of dedicated gardeners that are willing to give up their precious recess time to help keep our campus beautiful. Approximately twenty second and third graders are known as the Recess Gardeners. For two months, they have helped to maintain our gardens so that we may attract butterflies and give them food as well as grow herbs to be enjoyed by all that wants to smell.
Two years ago, the Green Team at CHES purchased a compost bin for our garden compost needs. For most of that year, the students added their snack wastes and dumped a collection bin from the teacher's lounge into the compost bin. They added water and let it "cook" for over a year. They now are able to add the nutrient filled compost to the gardens to help nourish the plants and seeds.
Our second and third grade friends helped to weed, add compost, and plant seeds and plants. They were very proud of their efforts and we know the school will benefit from their hard work and dedication to keeping our campus "green"!
