Westwood Earth Day 2015

By:

In an effort to raise awareness about making green choices on campus and in the community, the Westwood High School Environmental Club decided to make a large poster for the cafeteria and film a promotional video for Earth Day.

Environmental Club spent two meetings after school drawing the poster and coloring it.  Our design included wind turbines and a cyclist to promote the reduction of carbon emissions through greener transportation and renewable energy sources.  While working on the poster, the students discussed the importance of these symbols on the poster and their relation to Earth Day in their conversations.  This activity was a fun way to start casual conversations about the importance of caring for the planet.

The Westwood Planeteers then filmed a video that focused on how students and faculty at the school could participate in Earth Day just by recycling items they normally throw away.  The main message was that even though recycling may take more work than just throwing something away, choosing to recycle is caring about our home.  The video promoted that these small choices really have the potential to make a big impact.

Teachers at school who were encouraged to play the short video at the beginning of their classes.  The video was also played for the students in the cafeteria at lunchtime during Earth Day Week.
