BWE Rain Garden Installation

By:

In 2014, Bryker Woods Elementary, was site of 1 of the first 2 rain gardens installed in Austin ISD through the partnership of the University of Texas Civil Engineering Department and the City of Austin's Watershed Department.

Bryker Woods Elementary campus is home to many watershed issues as well as erosion issues as it sits on the banks of Shoal Creek, a major river that runs through Austin and into Lady Bird Lake.

Site visits by UT Students began in the Spring of 2013 and the installation of the rain garden was started in the Spring of 2014.

5th and 6th grade students and parents came out to help install the campus rain garden.

A You Tube video was created by the University showing our student and parent invovlement in the project.

The video starts out with an assessment of Doss Elementary and then moves into our installation day at Bryker

Woods. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6tOWZ-7EkgQ

This school year, 2015-2016 Bryker Woods has engaged in discussions with a local civil engineer that works with the current Shoal Creek Restoration project.  Campus grounds have another ideal area to complete a 2nd rain garden below this garden. Plans to introduce a second garden for the year 2016 are in place as 5th and 6th grade student audit the area and follow the guidelines of the previous rain garden installed with the help of UT.

5th and 6th grade will complete this campus project through our STEAM program.
