1st Annual UNPLUGGED at Bryker Woods!

On May 5th, Bryker Woods Elementary hosted its first "Unplugged" encorporating the SEL: Social and Emotional Learning program AISD follows and the Health and Wellness of students through engaging activities that will keep both parents and their children off the phones, off the ipads, and engaged with each other in "unplugged" activites like musical yoga, unicycle practice, and several "brain stations". 

All electronic devices are to be shut off and those that are not are collected.  

5:00-6:30pm Main Events (10 activities total)

6:30-7:00pm Family Picnic

Main Events

On arrival, students will be given a VIP Badge.  4 of 10 activities need to be achieved by students and their families to be placed in a drawing for door prizes.  Once an activity is completed, the VIP Badge will receive a stamp.  Activities will take roughly 15-20 minutes to complete.  More activities are encouraged. 

All activites encourage family connection, partnership, teamwork, presererverance, cooperation and communication.

Family Picnic to Follow Main Events

The family picnic will be held outdoors in the Bryker Woods "Backyard" which is the playground, field, and hill behind the school with continued non-use of electronic devices and having a family "Nature Adventure".

Roughly 300 students, siblings, and parents attended the event.

1. Board Games (Purpose of this Station:  Connect, Communicate, Share, and Accept Losses)

7. Musical Yoga (like musical chairs but when music stops a partner pose is chosen)

PRIZES FOR COMPLETING at least 4 STATIONS:

Students that Completed at least 4 of the events were able to place their names in a drawing for the end of the night.

Prizes in the drawing included:  Uni-Cycling Lessons, Scottish-Rite Theater Tickets, Family Passes to the YMCA, Playland Skate Center Tickets for the Family, S'Mores Kits for the Family, and outdoor Games!  Prized were focussed on family, the outdoors, and excercise!  All prizes were dontated by local area businesses!

Dear Panther Families,

Get ready for a night of fun, teamwork, and connection at Bryker Woods' first annual family SEL night: “Unplugged at BW”!

On May 5th from 5:00-6:30 pm we will be unplugging from our devices and connecting through games, mindfulness activities, and even unicycle riding! At this “Unplugged” everyone gets a V.I.P. badge!

So save the date and come ready to laugh, share, and connect with family and friends. There will be 10 stations set up for you to move through with your family. Each station will be focused on SEL skills: communication, perseverance, teamwork, decision making, self and social awareness, cooperation, focus and more! 

Wear comfy clothes and come ready to get active and have fun!

If you wish, bring a picnic or packed dinner and from 6:30-7:00 we will dine on the grounds!

SCHOOL-WIDE Email DAY of EVENT:

This Thursday...Unplugged at BW!

Get ready to Unplug and Connect!

This Thursday from 5:00-6:30 p.m. Bryker Woods will be having its first annual SEL Family Fun Night.

We will start handing out VIP badges at 5:00, at the entrance to the school. We will gather in the cafeteria for our kick off and for an hour and a half we will have fun challenging ourselves, cooperating, working as partners and teams, talking about feelings and how we manage them and laughing, sharing, and making great memories. There will be 10 stations (Marshmallow tower," Oopsortunity" tree, Brain station, Unicycle challenge and many more!) of fun, connection, and learning. Families will move to different stations throughout the time, not in any particular order, just what looks fun and interesting. At each station once you complete it, you will get a sticker to add to your VIP badge, once you have collected 4 you may put your name in for a door prize. . At 6:30 we will begin the door prize drawing. We have family passes for the YMCA, Playland Skate Center and Scotish Rite Theater, along with a wonderful S’more making kit, water balloon kit and more! If you are not able to come right at 5:00, you can always come later, we will be mixing and moving the whole time! I can’t wait to see everyone there, it will be a night to remember!!

We unplugged, connected, laughed, challenged ourselves (unicycle anyone?) and had a great time! A huge thank you goes out to so many people who helped to make this night happen!
