Davis Middle Creates Clean Air Classroom Doors
Stockbridge: School resource officer Deputy Sheriff Brian Reents took the lead on pollution reduction at General Ray Davis Middle School this year. He served as a co-sponsor for the science and math club and saw Clean Air Schools programs as an opportunity to improve student health and school safety. “We have over 130 cars on campus everyday. The bus riding and carpool programs helped us to reduce that number,” said Deputy Reents. “Fewer cars—less traffic—make our school safer.”
During Air Quality Awareness Week Deputy Reents organized a school-wide door decorating contest and Air Quality Index shirt day, on which students wore green, yellow, orange, purple, and red shirts. These activities helped reinforce the messages Deputy Reents and the math and science club had been sending all year. Davis Middle School Principal Mike Mauriello sees the value of the program for the school and community. “The students’ enthusiasm about the program,” he said, “spread clean air messages to their parents and helped raise awareness in the community.”
