eggs-cellent cooking

Stonewall Gardens provides a multi-sensory learning experience. Recently a generous donation, a chicken coop, was provided to Stonewall Gardens to encourage student explorations of life cycles. The classes had concluded their 5-senses lessons and wanted to utilize what they had learned.
We were ready to break in the burners, skillets, and spatulas. With our discussion about cooking, the classes decided we really enjoyed the smell of basil. What can we do with this herb? Cook! We asked Mr. Pittillo to save us some eggs from the chicken coop. The students went to the garden and collected herbs. We selected basil because of the smell, oregano because it reminded us of pizza, and rosemary because many of the students had experiences at home with this herb. We cooked 6 batches in all: 3 batches with store bought eggs & each herb, and 3 batches with chicken coop eggs & each herb.
Conclusions:
-store bought eggs are larger than chicken coop eggs
-chicken coop eggs have a yolk that is much darker/golden than store bought eggs
-chicken coop eggs ave a stronger smell & taste
-cooking is fun
-chicken coop eggs with oregano were our favorite!
It is mulit-sensory learning that facilitates true passion. Whether it is parent/child or teacher/student, collectively we achieve a similar goal: allowing children to have real adventures and natural experiences. It is our hope that our students will forever remember these experiences and carry the lessons into adulthood.
