Naturral Classrooms

Eisenhower High School ecology students have started 60 perennial native plants for fall planting into elevated garden beds to be built after Labor Day. Materials have been purchased and we are just awaiting the delivery of top soil to start the beds. Another order of over 300 native plants will be made for a fall planting mid-September.
Negotiations have been completed to partner with the Westar Energy Green Team to build a 20'x20' pergola as as an outdoor classroom. Once the pergola is built (from recycled wood) it will have native grasses (Indian Grass, Big Bluestem and Little Bluestem) planted nearby to create a unique setting; creeping vines will also be planted to encourage leaf coverage in the warmer months for additional shading.
Six flip top table benches have been constructed by the students to use in the outdoor classroom.
