Solar Cooking
By:
Students in the ecology classes learn how to pateurize water in solar cookers to help them appreciate the clean water that comes directly out of their faucets at home. This is also a good survival skill--in Kansas we commonly loose electricity due to violent storms, tornados and winter ice no mattere the season. Knowing how to cook and make water suitable to drink for their familiy using simple items like a cardboard box, aluminum foil and a dark pot becomes a great skill for students. The students make pizza box ovens, Pringle Can cookers, and box reflector ovens. They prepare and cook a variety of food, using the scientific method to determine which foods cook best through experimentation. And our course they get to each what they cook!
