Walk or Bike to School
By:
For the first month of our Wednesday bike or walk to school program, many students participated. Many parents joined the students, particularly the younger students, in riding bikes or walking to school. The fact that a bid deal was made by teachers and other staff members helped encourage paticipation. The free Cliff Bars and stickers were also good motivators. However, once the free treats ran out and not as bid a deal was made by school staff members, participation in the bike or walk to scshool program began to dwindle. Students learned about saving energy, polluting less, and the benefits of healthy exercise. Many kids expressed how much fun it was compared to a car ride. Parents enjoyed spending the time with their children in a fun and free activity. In the furture, the bike or walk program might benefit from more frequent reminders encouraging students and parents to participate. Perhaps having freebies offered at various unpredictable intervals would be an incentive as well.
