America Recycles Day 2011
By:
Since 1997, communities across the country have come together on November 15 to celebrate America Recycles Day. More than a celebration, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to the promotion of recycling in the United States. One day to educate and motivate. One day to get our neighbors, friends and community leaders excited about what can be accomplished when we all work together. One day to make recycling bigger and better 365 days a year.
Ascension students got involved by holding a plastic bag-recycling event. Many communities offer curbside recycling for plastics, but do not include plastic bags. A plastic bag-recycling event will help educate people that recycling plastic bags is as simple as bringing them back to participating stores. Many grocers and retail stores will take back bags, but many people do not bother to bring them back when they go shopping.
- Plastic bags are recycled into product like low-maintenance fencing, backyard decks, benches, and new bags.
- About 89 billion plastic bags, sacks and wraps are used each year in the U.S.
- According to the EPA, the category of plastics, which includes bags, sacks, and wraps was recycled at 9 percent in 2009.
Our students were very excited and worked together to collect 6,473 plastic bags for this one day event. The bags were brought to Publix for recycling.
