Future City Team
By:
Our Future City team has been working since the beginning of this school year to meet the challenges of the National Engineers Week Competition. The Future City Competition is a national project-based learning experience for students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grades to imagine, design, and build cities of the future. Across the nation, teams of middle school students work on their cities with educators and engineer mentors every Friday afternoon 3 to 5 pm. from September through February. Student teams plan cities with SimCityTM4 Deluxe software; build tabletop scale models with recycled materials; research and write solutions to an engineering problem; and present their ideas before judges at Regional Competitions in January. Regional winners represent their region at the National Finals in Washington, DC in February. Our team traveled to St. Petersburg for regional competition on Saturday, January 21, 2012, and represented Ascension well. Our first city Miri Miri is located in outer space, and features innovative uses of solar energy. Miri Miri won the Special Award for Transportation Systems and placed 8th overall. KoKino Planiti is located on Mars and features biomass and geothermal energy solutions. KoKino Planiti placed 12th overall, in a field of 24. This is the fourth year Ascension has competed in the National Engineers Week Future City Challenge. Congratulations to the fourteen students involved in this team effort and thank you to our engineer-mentor Mr. Wells, and teacher-coach Mrs. Wells
