Harvest Food of the Month
By:
Our Food and Child Nutrition Services Department in our school district decided on their nutrition education theme for this year. It is Know Your Food: Grow with School Meals. As part of this program they kicked off with the Harvest of the Month Program. Each month DallasISD school cafeterias featured Texas grown fruits and vegetables. Students had the opportunity to:
*taste a variety of regionally grown fruits and vegetables
*learn about where their food comes from
*discover flavorful, nutritious ways to enjoy farm fresh fruits and vegetables
What did the students get to taste for each harvest of the month? Here is the delicious list!
September watermelon, pinto beans
October apples
November microgreens, mini vegetables
December cabbage
January butternut squash, beets, sweet potatoes
February grapefruit
March oranges
April red potatoes
May cream peas
Coach Ochoa and Ms. Southwick worked with the cafeteria manager, Mrs. G., to extend knowledge about each fruit and vegetable. What the vegetable is, how it is grown, where it is grown, nutritional information and fun facts were shared with the students. Students also learned how to pick the perfect grapefruit, new snack ideas for eating apples and how to grow their own sweet potato house plant. Students got to sample the fruit or vegetable when they went to lunch.
Students enjoyed trying the fruits and vegetables. For some students, this was the first time they had ever tried some of the fruits and vegetables. They were pleasantly surprised to find that they liked some of them.
