How much SUGAR are you eating?
By:
SUGAR! Everyone loves sugar! Our bodies need SOME sugar. We wanted to show students instead of just telling them that there is a lot of sugar in most processed foods they eat. It is important to limit their intake of refined sugars. They need to read those food labels and compare the amount of sugar in cereals, drinks, snacks, and other foods when they are shopping with their parents. Buy the product that is the healthiest and low in sugar! Natural sugar in fruits and vegetables is the sugar that is best for their body. Not refined sugar.
For Family Math and Science Night, Ms. Southwick, our garden teacher, Mrs. Torres, the nurse, and Ms. Ochoa, our PE teacher set up an exhibit for students and parents to see how much sugar is in different products. It is predicted that by 2050 95% of Americans will be overweight and obese. Educating our young people now will help to prevent that problem for them in the future. Ms. Southwick also shared this exhibit with all students during her nutrition classes so all students were able to learn about sugar.
Important facts about sugar were shared.
Students were amazed at the increase of sugar consumption in a one hundred year time period. They thought 5 pounds was a lot. It was hard to imagine consuming 150 pounds of sugar in a year. They also learned to look out for hidden sugars.
Comparing juices, sodas and milk... Water is the best! 60-75% of our body is water.
Of all the cereal on the table Cheerios had the least amount of sugar! 1 gram in one cup.
Nutthins and Goldfish had 0 grams of sugar.
The English muffins were better than the Raisin Swirl bread. Reduced fat Jiff had less sugar than two other peanut butter products. The Lays potato chips had low sugar, fat and sodium in comparison to Sun Chips. Students were amazed . They have promised to be SUGAR DETECTIVES when they go grocery shopping with their parents.
