Earth Week 2016

By:

Our school spent Earth Week focusing on reducing waste. In the classrooms, that meant each class used a ruler to measure how many inches of trash was in their classroom bin every day. Grade levels competed to see who had the least amount of trash by the end of the week with the winning classes earning an extra recess.  Students got competitive and creative and reminded each other to bring water bottles from home and use fewer paper towels when drying their hands.

We also held a Waste Free Wednesday in the cafeteria and encouraged students to bring reusable lunch containers. To get the word out we sent home flyers one week prior to the event to let students and parents know the date with suggestions on how to pack a waste free lunch. Our Green Team made colorful posters to hang on walls throughout the school and we printed a two large posters from the EPA website to hang in the cafeteria. The custodial staff helped count trash bags during lunch periods throughout the week so we could evaluate the impact of our Waste Free Wednesday. As added incentive, our principal and one teacher in each grade offered to wear green wigs on Friday (Earth Day) if we met our goal of reducing cafeteria waste. Mission accomplished!
