Harvest of the Month

Students were provided with samples of healthy local and seasonal fruits and vegetables, such as persimmons, spinich, red bell peppers, and snap peas at recess time once a month.  Our local Food for Thought program provided the healthy snacks and the volunteers to prepare and serve them to the students.  The volunteers also talked to the students about the foods they were sampling, encouraging those who were hesitant to try something new.  It was encouraging to watch students try a new fruit or vegetable and then light up with a big smile and proclaim how much they loved it.  This type of hands on experience will be apt to stay with the children, possibly encouraging them to ask their parents to buy some of the healthy foods they learned about and sampled at school recess.
